Greeting from our Head of Departement

It is an honor for me to serve as Chair of the Department of Architecture for the term of office from 1 July 2025 to 30 September 2027, with a vision for the development of architecture centered on human beings, spatial experience, and responsibility toward the future of the environment.

During this period, the Department of Architecture positions sensory approaches (neuro-architecture) and artificial intelligence as fundamental pillars in education, research, and professional practice. This approach encourages a deep understanding of how light, materials, color, acoustics, textures, and spatial configurations influence human cognitive and emotional responses. Architecture is understood as a system capable of enhancing quality of life, mental health, and comfort through design that is conscious of both the senses and the human mind.

In line with contemporary developments, digital technologies and artificial intelligence are integrated as tools for exploration and analysis in the design process. The Department of Architecture utilizes these technologies to interpret user behavior patterns, simulate spatial experiences, and support more adaptive, precise, and data-driven design decision-making.

All of these processes are grounded in conscience, ethics, and a commitment to environmental sustainability. The Department of Architecture strives to cultivate graduates who not only excel technically and professionally, but also possess social sensitivity, empathy toward people, and a strong ecological awareness.

Through sensory, neuro-architectural, and digital technology-based approaches, the Department of Architecture is committed to becoming a nurturing environment for future architects who are innovative, humanistic, and responsible toward the built environment and life itself.

History of the Departemen of Architecture

The Faculty of Engineering at Atma Jaya Yogyakarta University (UAJY) was established in 1967, two years after Atma Jaya Yogyakarta University was founded on September 27, 1965, by the “Lima Serangkai” (Five Founders) of the Yogyakarta Chapter of the Association of Catholic Scholars (ISKAT): Prof. R.A. Soehardi, S.H., Drs. A.J. Liem Sioe Siet, A. Sutijoso, S.H., Prof. Drs. Oey Liang Lee, and Dr. Leo Soekoto, S.J.

In its early stages, the UAJY Faculty of Engineering offered two programs: Chemical Engineering and Civil Engineering. Due to a lack of growth, the Chemical Engineering program was closed in 1975. Fourteen years later, in 1981, the Architecture program was established to meet the need for high-quality architectural higher education in Indonesia. Upon its establishment, the program immediately admitted approximately 75 new students.
